‘In the west, nothing is new’

In the west, nothing is new achieved its record number of BAFTA nominations with a major winning streak at the film’s awards ceremony on Sunday night.
At London’s Royal Festival Hall, Netflix’s German anti-war epic won BAFTAs for Best Picture, alongside Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director, and took home Most Craftsmanship honors for a total of seven gongs (a BAFTA record for a film not in the English language).
Far from western frontby Martin McDonagh The Banshees of Inisherin took home four awards, including half performance honors, with Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan picking up wins. Elsewhere, Austin Butler won Best Actor for Elvisand Cate Blanchett lead actress for Tar.
As largely expected, Richard E. Grant was a delightfully upbeat and uncontroversial host, with no political jokes or banter at guests (although he made reference to Will Smith, noting at the start that “No one under my watch is being slapped tonight”). And despite the BAFTAs moving to a brand new venue and with its larger number of nominees in attendance, there was no slip-up.
Well, almost.
When Troy Kotsur revealed the Best Supporting Actress, her sign language translator mistakenly said the winner was She says‘s Carey Mulligan, when in fact – as was corrected moments later – it was Condon. Not quite the Oscars La La Land snafu (but enough for some quick-fingered reporters – including this one – to announce the wrong name).
